This position is a key player in the Office of Communications and Marketing’s comprehensive communications strategy, providing critical technical leadership and vision to a team that serves the overall communications needs of the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University. Position serves as the technical lead for Arts and Sciences’ entire web presence by facilitating all aspects of the School’s web efforts, which includes researching, planning, and developing interactive applications.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job: Initiate, design, and develop code and web applications, as well as research, plan, implement, and test interactive applications. Serve as primary investigator of emerging web-based technologies, providing guidance, training, consultation, and/or leadership to peers and support staff (including department and center web contacts). Collaborate with the senior art director and director of communications and marketing to serve the web-related needs of the school overall, including developing and building websites; creating standards for web design, code, and content; working collaboratively with the school’s IT team; and providing expertise and vision to investigate and execute web projects that support the school’s academic endeavors, nurture community, and better promote the school as a whole and further its mission. Manage all technical phases of project development, which includes initial client consultations, building applications architecture, and implementing and evaluating applications and enhancements. Serve as technical lead in implementing new Content Management System (SiteExecutive 4.1) school-wide, including managing upgrade of sites in older version of SE and conversion of others into CMS, testing and implementation, and writing custom modules to run in the CMS. Provide train-the-trainer training in CMS for LAN administrators who would assist department and center staff in administering the CMS for their websites. Develop and maintain databases and related web applications. This includes independently designing and developing new databases and associated web applications including front- and back-end development; maintaining and supporting databases; coding, testing, debugging, documenting, and implementing web applications to support daily activities; facilitating appropriate access and ensuring data security and integrity; and working collaboratively with university IT (HITS). Participate in the overall maintenance of quality and consistency of the school’s brand with an aesthetic sense and attention to detail, including cross-browser and cross-platform consistency, as well as compliance and accessibility requirements.

Due to the very technical nature of the work, the position requires someone able to adapt to changes in technology and environment quickly and easily, as well as serve as a change agent in promoting change among colleagues within the organization and its user communities. The candidate is expected to stay abreast of technologies that are relevant to his/her daily duties through formal training programs or independent study, as well as to explore new technologies that would benefit the organization or its initiatives. The qualified candidate must also be able to demonstrate a strong ability to work in a team, communicate effectively via all mediums, and provide instruction and guidance for non-technical users.

Posted Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Qualified candidates must have a minimum of three years of related experience, working with web technologies including: Cold Fusion, SQL, Java, HTML, XML, JavaScript, Flash, Microsoft Windows Servers, Photoshop, Fireworks. Or appropriate combination of education and experience – Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience. Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.

Must demonstrate knowledge and solutions for cross-platform and browser web development and design. Must have a strong aesthetic sensibility and an understanding of web usability standards and content management systems (ideally SiteExecutive).

This position is a part of the Office of Communications and Marketing web team and should work closely with other team members. Applicants should submit URLS of websites they have developed.
