Web Designer
at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA
Position Summary: We are seeking a web designer to assist with a variety of web and web-related design projects at Humboldt State University. The focus is on websites that reach and influence strategically important audiences. The Web Designer is responsible for designing and building websites for the University as a whole, as well as for specific campus units. The Web Designer also creates interactive web features and handles other multimedia projects. There is extensive contact with campus clients, which requires the Web Designer to pro- vide clear guidance about best practices in web design as well as general communications strategy. The individual must be familiar with design techniques and principles. He or she works closely with the creative staff within Marketing & Communications, which includes other web designers, print designers, and writers. Marketing & Communications is a fast-paced unit frequently working on multiple projects with tight deadlines. Creativity and team-work are highly valued.
Duties: The primary duty of the Web Designer is to assist with campus-wide and client web projects. This includes assisting with the design of top-level websites and web templates for the University and creating targeted web pages for the University. The Web Designer routinely meets with campus clients to discuss projects or potentials projects, works closely with campus clients to identify and develop strategies for web and related projects, design web sites and interactive web features, and create multimedia projects for the web and other uses. This position also shares responsibility for updating emergency information on the web during crisis situations. In addition, the Web Designer is expected to conduct training sessions with clients, respond to phone and e-mail inquiries, answer questions from campus staff, and coordinate projects with staff in other areas of Marketing & Communications.
Minimum Qualifications: Education & Experience: Equivalent to a degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field and one year professional experience designing and building websites. Professional experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Abilities & Specialized Skills: Must possess graphic design skills as well as a strong web design skill set including experience with HTML, CSS, Javascript, Forms Processing, Web Standards, Section 508 Accessibility Standards, CMS software packages, web templating. Experience in both Mac OS and Windows environments. Experience using current graphics and web design applications. Requires excellent communication skills, creativity and personal motivation. Ability to manage numerous concurrent projects, as well as a team approach to projects. Ability to work quickly and efficiently in a detail-oriented, deadline-driven work environment. Ability to communicate with clients about technical and creative issues. Must be able to accurately perceive color, be efficient in a fast-paced environment, and work for extended periods at computers
