Web Designer
at Davison College in Davidson, NC
A key member of the College Communications team, the Web Designer/Media Developer will work collaboratively in the design and development of Davidson's Web sites and its interactive content/multimedia in order to increase understanding of and support for Davidson among external and internal constituents, primarily prospective students, alumni, parents, and friends. Reporting to the Director of Electronic Communications in the Office of College Communications, the Web Designer/Media Developer works closely and collaboratively with the interdepartmental web team, made up of staff from College Communications and ITS.
Essential Functions
Maintain and enhance the look and feel of Davidson's external web site and create new design templates within the framework of the content management system (currently Ingeniux), utilizing CSS and development of XML where needed.
Maintain and enhance the look and feel of Davidson's internal web site using Sharepoint, Wordpress and other tools.
Advise and assist in the development of departmental Web pages, using the CMS, Sharepoint, Wordpress, and other blogging tools.
Collaborate effectively with colleagues in ITS, both on freestanding projects and through the interdepartmental Web Team.
Assist clients from academic and administrative departments across campus with the assessment of college and department functional and communication needs.
Serve as a resource for all official, non-curricular multimedia on Davidson College's web site working collaboratively with campus constituents and colleagues within the Communications Office to develop content.
Provide departmental liaisons with advance and on-demand training and support to maintain departmental pages on the external and internal Web sites. Help develop online training materials.
Collaborate with campus constituents on other digital initiatives.
Respond to Web-help requests as appropriate; respond to or forward Webmaster inquiries.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of professional web design experience, preferably in a higher education or non-profit setting. Previous experience working with a content management system (Davidson uses Ingeniux) is essential. Experience with Sharepoint and Ingeniux are desired, as is experience with testing/validation and wireframing. Rich media experience (video/audio podcasting, video streaming, video/animation integration, etc) is a strong plus.
Expertise in Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver are required, as are a strong working knowledge of HTML, HTMLS, DHTML, XML, XSLT, Java Script, Action Script, CSS, and related web technologies. Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and deploying web content to mobile devices are important, as well as proficiency around a range of codes and working knowledge of encoding standards for optimal online delivery of multimedia content.
