Job Summary:

As a member of the Institute Marketing and Communication team, the Web designer will optimize, design and build web sites and other digital properties that support the goals of the California Institute of Technology.

Projects will range from daily optimization of the Institute’s main web presence to minor revisions of individual pages and digital properties to major design initiatives. A successful candidate will have proven experience working with clients to provide creative, innovative, original design and production direction. He/she must be able to interpret narrative materials and portray concepts, technical data and objectives through a wide variety of media and techniques, working within budget and time constraints as part of a collaborative, cross-functional team.

The ideal candidate will have experience with a wide variety of Web technologies and software for graphics, animation, text, multi-media, dynamic and/or interactive content presentation. Experience with database applications, including scripting languages is preferred.

Job Duties:
As part of Caltech’s Marketing and Communications team, the Web designer reports to the Director of Online Communications, and is responsible for optimizing the Institute’s web presence.

He/she will partner with the Editor of Online Communications to prepare for and display in the best way possible, online content on a daily basis by recommending and designing layout for content for a variety of internal and external audiences, including media, current and potential donors, current and prospective students, legislators, business community members, Caltech faculty and staff and the general public.

Using CSS, HTML, photography, video, audio, illustration, animation or a combination of these as necessary, he/she will create institute-wide digital communications materials,

Acts as a resource for all Caltech top-level pages (www.caltech.edu, today.caltech.edu, president.caltech.edu etc.) and Development and Institute Relations Web design projects.

Produces finished drawings, illustrations, graphs, charts and maps for visual and interactive online presentations.

Designs integrated systems for Web and other on-line media, including mobile devices and HTML e-mail.

Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.

  • At least 4 years of experience in all aspects of web design, integrating accessibility, performance, elegance, usability and cross-browser compatibility into all aspects of design.
  • A demonstrated ability to produce sophisticated layouts and stylish electronic graphic treatments based on strategic input; Proven track record building successful web designs with a focus on effective user interface and accessibility
  • Strong design foundation including typography, composition and color theory, as well as experience with photography
  • Ability to develop online strategies and creative concepts that meet goals and objectives of the division/ department make recommendations regarding overall look of materials, design themes and identity based on strategic understanding of organization and team goals, priorities, resources and other considerations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with personnel at all levels of the organization, including administration, faculty, students, and staff
  • Proven ability to monitor and track projects and assignments to assure quality production and conformance to technical standards and production deadlines.
  • Proficiency at using Adobe Creative Suite Design Professional applications, such as Illustrator, PhotoShop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver and Fireworks.
  • Keep up on Web design trends like developments with HTML5 and CSS 3
  • Proficiency in and hands-on experience with development using XHTML
  • Deep understanding of cross platform compatibility
  • Experience with scheduling tasks within a production environment
  • Strong project management and consultative skills, including the ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple projects, and prioritize based on business impact. Ability to organize/prioritize work and meet deadlines within a fast paced environment with multiple and competing demands.
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision, and work as part of a creative team of web programmers, writers, editors
  • Excellent organizational, time management, communication, and presentation skills; Able to work on tight deadlines and on several projects simultaneously
  • Monitor trends in web use and content engagement to make recommendations that contribute to the development and promotion of the Institution’s public relations, community relations and internal communications strategy
  • Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, enthusiasm, and diplomacy both individually and as part of a complex team; adept at dealing with ambiguity and a changing work environment
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion of varying views, including the ability to interface with people at all levels within the organization.

Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in interactive design, graphic design, computer graphics or related field

Have a strong portfolio that demonstrates design skills as well as strong conceptual/strategic thinking.

Experience with Flash

Knowledge of higher education

Familiarity using a variety of online communications vehicles to meet strategic organization design needs

Ability to determine a consistent brand and style across multiple vehicles and online projects

Experience in creating designs that are easily translated by developers into Drupal themes.

Basic understanding of XML, PHP and Drupal a plus

After Effects and video editing a plus

Sense of humor a plus.

Experience in advertising, promotions or other consumer/engagement campaigns a plus.
