We are currently seeking a full time, salaried Applications Team Manager to join our team of eleven close-knit IT staff members. The following are the key activities for this position:
• Troubleshoot and maintain databases, queries, reports and user interfaces as needed, and assist users with database problems.
• Supervise five other members of the Applications Team of Information Technology, including database personnel and those who create and maintain the University’s web sites. Fill in for other team members as needed.
• Assist in selection, installation and implementation of third-party databases.
• Recommend University-wide data strategy, including how best to use data from multiple source databases while minimizing errors and duplicate records. Define policies and make recommendations regarding University database needs and the creation, sharing, “ownership” and maintenance of databases. Oversee database management on a University-wide scale, with the active solicitation of input from all potentially affected departments and the development of coherent long-range planning for the University's database management needs.
• Act as lead in developing University-wide data entry standards; assure compliance with data standards through education and monitoring. Develop standards for report requests.
• Act as liaison between departments in issues regarding data.
Qualifications:
• A four-year degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience is required. Formal education in management and in database theory is preferred.
• Three years’ experience managing others is required.
• Must have a thorough understanding of database theory, design and management, including querying, report-writing, web-based user interfaces, data dictionaries and standards.
• Must have thorough knowledge of Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, ASP and SQL Server.
• Three years’ experience managing complex databases is required. Should have proven track record in management of complex projects. Prefer experience with data dictionary and data standards development. Prefer working knowledge of web site development.
• Must have the ability to deal professionally, ethically and legally with confidential data.
• Must maintain a global perspective while being detail-oriented.
• Must have strong verbal and written communication skills; must be good at team-building and able to motivate others. Must be able to talk to departmental representatives about coordination of departmental and University database and web needs and formulate guidelines to make this coordination a reality.
• Must be able to evaluate and recommend solutions for complex database needs.
