Under the general direction of the Director of Web Communications and reporting to the Manager of Web Development, the Web Developer will develop strategies and lead ongoing initiatives to create and sustain the online presence for Washington and Lee, www.wlu.edu, and specifically the web presences of academic departments and administrative offices whose primary focus is the University community: faculty, staff and current students. Candidate will work with Manager of Web Development to define site architecture and navigation, recommend the most effective digital platforms, and measure success based on agreed goals and website analytics.

Chief among the Web Developer’s responsibilities is the development and maintenance of the content management infrastructure for University websites, incorporating the latest techniques to provide users with an optimal browsing experience on all computing platforms, including mobile devices, and ensuring compliance with ADA accessibility guidelines. The Web Developer will lead an initiative to migrate the University’s existing web pages to new mobile- and ADA-accessible templates, and thereafter serve as primary technical contact for the majority of those pages. The Web Developer must understand website design, usability, and the impact of content to create a dynamic and interesting online user experience for multiple audiences. The Web Developer is expected to be an expert within the University for web content and information architecture, acting as technical support and backup to the Manager of Web Development in ensuring the continuous public availability of the University’s website and the swift resolution of service issues, while providing user support to the University’s 100+ content managers working in both Ingeniux, the University’s content management system, and WordPress, the University’s preferred blogging platform.
