Position:
The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Freelance Web Designer to assist with the development of creative, functional and user-friendly web-based communications projects in support of the CSU's mission and priorities. This is a temporary on call freelance hourly position.
Duties:
Under direction of the Senior Web Manager, the incumbent will:
• Work with Senior Web Manager and Art Director to execute design strategy for CSU internal and external web communications objectives.
• Produce layout, design and visual elements for web sites, e-newsletters, and other web-based projects and graphics using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and InDesign.
• Assist web team on usability and design issues, such as navigation, search engine optimization and accessibility.
• Produce web-based graphics and photos to support web development team needs
• Work closely with staff to design and produce website templates for major initiatives.
• Maintain a strong understanding of latest and emerging Web design trends and standards, technology and accessibility issues.
• Work collaboratively with Communications staff, clients and web development team on all aspects of web projects.
• Create visual concepts that match content and image needed; ensure sites are easy to navigate and accessible
• Work closely with web development team to ensure exact specifications and requirements are clearly communicated and executed
• Work collaboratively with customers to plan and produce high-quality, cost-effective communications.
• Deliver projects on-time and within budget.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's Degree in Design or related field (or equivalent combination of experience and education)
• 3 to 5 years web design experience
• Demonstrated experience designing high-profile, highly-accessible websites
• Ability to prototype websites using HTML
• Thorough, production-level knowledge of digital imaging and illustration software, particularly Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop and Illustrator)
• Advanced knowledge of HTML, HTML5, XHTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, JQuery, WordPress, Dreamweaver and Contribute
• Advanced knowledge of designing for content management systems preferred
• Demonstrated experience with cross-browser and cross-platform issues (IE, Firefox, Safari, etc.)
• Advanced knowledge of social media standards
• Attention to detail, customer-service orientation, and creativity in problem-solving
• Demonstrated practical understanding of producing accessible communications; Section 508 facility is required, while WCAG 1.0/2.0 and/or CSU-ATI facility is highly desirable.
• Sharepoint 2007 or 2010 designing experience preferred
• Demonstrated ability to work productively in a highly collaborative, diverse work environment
• Demonstrated design and coding ability as proven through portfolio review and testing
• Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, and presentation skills
• Demonstrates ability to use effective communication and active listening skills to support management, experience working with and executing client projects
• Strong time management skills and ability to focus on multiple projects with competing deadlines
