SENIOR SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR - University Information Technology

This is an 18-month limited appointment position with an end date of June 1, 2011.
Part of University Information Technology (UIT), the University Systems Group (USG) currently provides enterprise mail as well as systems support for web, identity, research computing, and other services to the Tufts community. USG also provides Unix-based services of a more restricted, infrastructure-related scope.
The Senior Systems Administrator position will, in conjunction with other members of the University Systems Group, provide support for all Unix/Linux infrastructure services, including mail, LDAP, web services, storage, and virtualization services. Specifically, the Senior Systems Administrator will:
* Administer systems supporting the mission critical enterprise services: Monitor system health and performance; analyze and resolve reported system and application problems; and patch and update servers/application software as necessary; * Provide technical and organizational leadership: Organize and lead meetings, including presentations to technical and non-technical audiences; identify, propose, and respond to opportunities for innovative improvements to hardware and software facilities to ensure the University’s infrastructure is providing superior service and reliability; and document and develop routine and emergency procedures and practices, communicating same to USG staff and management; * Participate in the University System Group’s architectural, strategic, and service design processes as well as resulting projects. * Participate in committees, working groups, and project teams dealing with infrastructure systems, security, identity and account management, and provisioning; * Investigate new and emerging issues, trends and technologies; and, disseminate findings to USG and UIT.Basic Requirements:
* Bachelor’s degree * Minimum of five plus (5+) years of related experience * Five plus (5+) years of demonstrable senior level Unix system administration skills (Solaris 9/10 and Linux), including design, installation, and configuration of systems and services using enterprise computing principles, in a complex, heterogeneous environment * Programming ability using Perl and Bourne-like shells (demonstrated ability in other languages a plus) * Experience in technical leadership * Experience building and supporting Unix-based services in a large enterprise environment is essential * Good working knowledge of SSL/TLS, LDAP, DNS and other critical protocols required * Must possess strong communication/documentation skills, an ability to lift up to 30 lbs, and be available for periodic on-call dutiesPreferred Qualifications:Preferred skills: Experience in implementation of automated system configuration systems; design and implementation of redundant monitoring systems. A background in clustering and storage design, planning, and management is strongly preferred.Highly desirable skills – a successful applicant will have at least one of these:
1. Broad experience in storage architecture and management (NetApp primarily) 2. Hands-on experience in the design, implementation, and management of a virtualization infrastructure (VMWare specifically)Special Work Schedule Requirements:Participation in on-call rotation to support all group enterprise responsibilities, and availability for periodic on-call duties.
