Web Application Developer

Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) Web Development team is looking for a creative and analytical individual to join their team. The primary role of Web Application Developer is the development of both server-side and client-side components of robust and useable standards-based web sites, web site features, and web-based applications. Although the position’s focus is on the architecture, design and coding of web sites and web applications in a cross-browser, cross-platform environment, the preferred candidate will also have interest and proven skills in requirements analysis, information architecture, and interaction design. This position also provides daily operational support and maintenance of production web applications and web sites, participates in the creation and implementation of new initiatives for added functionality of applications and web sites, and integrates web-based systems with custom and off-the-shelf software packages and information systems. Additionally, the role plans, designs and develops relational database models and/or other persistence strategies as needed to support application requirements for data storage and retrieval.
The ideal candidate will understand, co-author, and share responsibility with ILR information technology staff for administration, maintenance, security, backup, and disaster recovery strategies of database and application services – Microsoft SQL Server and Macromedia ColdFusion Server, respectively and work as a trusted administrator within a managed Windows 2003/2008 Server Infrastructure and an Active Directory Domain.
Bachelor’s degree; in Computer Science or Technical area with computer experience with 3 – 5 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Proven ability to plan, design, code, test, and maintain efficient and usable web-based applications and extended features to existing in-house and third-party applications. Experience with and ongoing research and discovery of both server-side and client-side web programming techniques and best practices. Strong expertise in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including a strong working knowledge of the jQuery library. Strong expertise in server-side scripting languages, especially ColdFusion, PHP, and some Java. Solid mastery of interacting with SQL databases in code. Secondary knowledge of Python and/or Ruby desirable. Prior experience with administering and configuring Microsoft SQL Server and Macromedia ColdFusion Server, respectively. Experience and proficiency designing clean and usable graphical user interfaces and developing for multiple target browsers across platforms required. Experience building accessible websites required. Must have excellent customer service, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work with diverse clientele. Organizational skills and attention to detail is critical. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to organize complex information and concepts. Possess the ability to exercise good judgment and logic to anticipate and solve problems independently that may be urgent, sensitive or confidential in nature. Proven ability to successfully balance conflicting priorities, and make decisions from a range of choices while adhering to proper policies and procedures. Ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure within a fast-paced, office.
Preferred Qualifications:
Specific knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server including stored procedures, triggers, indexing, and other optimizations preferred. Experience administering Microsoft SQL Server preferred. Experience in extending and working within the boundaries of application frameworks, object oriented frameworks, packaged libraries, and web content management systems preferred.
