Web and Graphic Design Coordinator
at University of Richmond's School of Arts & Sciences in Richmond, Va
Reporting to the director of communications in the School of Arts & Sciences, the web and graphic design coordinator works in collaboration with the School’s communications coordinator. Responsible for designing print and electronic pieces that communicate the depth and breadth of the School’s departmental and programmatic offerings, with a strong emphasis on Web communications. The web and graphic design coordinator must complete a wide range of projects on time, on budget and often, with a fairly short turnaround—all the while maintaining the satisfaction of 35+ department and program “clients.”
Graphic Design (40%)
- Assists the director of communications in maintaining a consistent brand/graphic identity for the School in departmental communications
- Designs and produces a wide range of publications, including brochures, newsletters, invitations, posters and flyers
- Coordinates production of print pieces with the director of communications and the University’s art director
- Stays current on national trends in visual communications (style, process, technology, etc.) and recommends implementation options to the director of communications
Web Design and Management (20%)
- Manages technical quality assurance of 53 Arts & Sciences Web sites in conjunction with the director of communications
- Works with University Communications and Web Services on next-generation Web development including mobile and Web 2.0 initiatives
- Manages the School’s graphic identity on social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Flickr, etc.
Multimedia Development and Management (40%)
- Handles photo and video archiving for the School of Arts & Sciences, implementing consistent folksonomies that allow visual images to be shared effectively across campus using Web 2.0 technologies
- Takes photographs to accompany online features written by communications coordinator
- Photographs school and departmental events as needed
- Coordinates the taping of school and departmental events with Telecom; cuts footage and uploads video content to the Web
- Develops and creates multimedia productions, utilizing video and photography, that tell stories about the School of Arts & Sciences, for use on the University’s Web sites and YouTube channel
- Manages photo releases and permissions for communications projects
Requirements
- Thorough knowledge of HTML/XHTML and CSS
- Familiarity with managing Web sites in content management systems
- Thorough knowledge of Adobe Design Suite (InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator), MacOS, Dreamweaver
- Thorough knowledge of audio/visual editing software packages such as FinalCutPro, iMovie, Garageband and Quicktime
- Comfortable with WordPress Multi-User
- Thorough knowledge of publication production process
- Familiarity with best practices in Web site design
- Familiarity with social networking systems and other Web 2.0 technologies
- Comfortable with basic photography principles; advanced photography skills are helpful
- Effective presentation skills
- Team collaboration
- Ability to multitask, producing multiple projects at a time on deadline
Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree in visual communications or a related field.
1-3 years of graphic design experience (preference given to candidates with demonstrated web design knowledge); demonstrated competency and creativity in video production for the Web.
