Communication Specialist
The University of Notre Dame (www.nd.edu), one of the nation's top 20 institutions of higher learning, invites applications for the position of Communication Specialist within the Sociology Department. (http://sociology.nd.edu/). This position will work with the Principal Investigator of the Science of Generosity project - a global RFP competition for scientific research on the sources, manifestations, and consequences of generosity - to:
1) Raise the visibility and share research findings of the Science of Generosity project with target publics: scholars; leaders of philanthropic, religious and nonprofit organizations; and the media.
2) Position the project as the nexus of international discussion of the science of generosity and as a clearinghouse for spiritual information about the sources, manifestations, and consequences of generosity.
3) Manage internal communications with project staff and across the University campus.
Responsibilities:
Develop, plan, and direct the overall public communications outreach strategy, including:
- research on characteristics and needs of key target audiences (scholars, organization leaders, the media) and expand contact databases
- development of targeted strategic plans (with budget and measurable tactics) to attract the attention of and engage each audience (with measurable calls to action)
- implementation of tactical communications plans for each audience, including public relations, media relations, and advertising campaigns
Interpret, disseminate, and facilitate conversation regarding the project's activities and research findings with various publics using a variety of communications vehicles, including:
- project websites, other websites, blogs, bulletin boards, and listservs
- print and e-publications and promotions
- special presentations and events
- press releases and media pitches
- articles, opinion pieces, and letters to the editor
Collaborate with project director and members to create strategic and internal communication plans and with colleagues across campus - including the College's Office of Communications and the University's Office of Communications and Public Affairs - to implement communications plans. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a combination of experience and educational background in both the social sciences and communications.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field required. Master's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field preferred.
Skills Required:
- Expertise in strategic planning, writing, editing, copyediting, creative direction, project management, database management, staff and vendor supervision
- A high level of discretion and professionalism
- Ability to interact successfully with persons of various social, cultural, religious, economic, and educational backgrounds
- Strong interpersonal, networking, and relationship-building skills
- Excellent oral, and visual communication skills
- Demonstrated research, writing, and editing skills
- Ability to work effectively with shifting priorities, tight deadlines, and limited budgets
- Self-direction, confidence, and ability to take initiative performing new and non-routine tasks
Other Requirements:
- 5 years of experience in strategic communications
- Professional experience in higher education or academic publishing
- Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or related field
- Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, database software, web content management systems
