Mills College is a nationally respected independent liberal arts college for women with graduate programs for both women and men. Established in 2004, the Mills College Marketing Department is responsible for enhancing the institutional image of the College, student recruitment marketing, and fundraising support. The department oversees all primary advertising, publications, website design, and media relations activities for the College. The department also oversees the Office of College Events.
The College is recruiting for a Director of Media Relations.
Representative Duties
The role of the Director of Media Relations is to provide senior-level planning and execution of strategic media/public relations programs that position the College positively in the news media. This position is responsible for developing annual public/media relations plans, managing the daily activities of external media relations agencies, overseeing internal media relations staff, providing counsel and training for media interviews to College administrators and faculty, and partnering with the Associate Vice President of Marketing to enhance the institutional image of the College while supporting fundraising and student recruitment initiatives. The position will:
Develop and implement strategic media relations/public relations plans that support College initiatives and result in positive media coverage for Mills that enhance the image of and broaden awareness for the College and its work.
Partner with the Associate Vice President of Marketing in the promotion of major College initiatives and the Office of Institutional Advancement in the support of significant fundraising campaigns where a strong media presence is important to development success.
Build strong, positive working relationships with Mills administrators, faculty, and staff that will lead to a long-term and sustainable infrastructure for strategic media relations at the College and will enhance the reputation of the Mills Marketing Department.
Perform hands-on media relations/public relations work in a small, entrepreneurial department environment in collaboration with the Media Relations Manager, including but not limited to: implementing plans, responding to direct media inquiries, researching College facts and resources, identifying College news sources, and proactively communicating with journalists across media outlets to advance the mission of the College in line with College objectives.
Create written public relations materials such as opinion editorials, press releases, fact sheets, web content, press kits, and any other related materials that support the College's initiatives as necessary.
Strengthen the newly developed internal media relations infrastructure/operations to promote the College effectively while creating processes and systems for managing work flow, providing timely updates to the Associate Vice President of Marketing, measuring success, and communicating that success to various constituents.
Counsel the Mills community in a respectful and positive way on the role of media relations and develop processes and systems for managing both expectations and work to ensure positive outcomes and strong internal relationships.
Perform related duties as needed.
Minimum Requirements Senior-level experience (10+ years) in a media or public relations management position, preferably in a higher education environment, or comparable experience in an environment with multiple constituents, such as the media, donors, customers, and the broader public.
Strong working knowledge of media relations best practices, strategies, systems, and techniques for obtaining positive news coverage and strategically positioning an organization while enhancing its reputation and its awareness level.
Ability to be both strategic and hands-on in an entrepreneurial yet highly structured and nuanced environment while maintaining strategic focus and meeting all deliverables.
Demonstrated success in obtaining positive media coverage and the ability to measure and communicate successful results effectively to senior management.
Outstanding oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to build strong, positive working relationships across all College departments and levels while effectively navigating College policies and protocols in a rapidly changing environment requiring finesse and flexibility.
Ability to make thoughtful, timely decisions utilizing sound judgment and knowledge of the organization's goals while consulting the appropriate individuals and keeping your supervisor informed.
Knowledge of current trends in journalism, news gathering and dissemination, the emerging role of social media, and current working knowledge of multiple media channels.
Ability to develop and execute strategic written media/public relations plans with implementation strategies, metrics, timelines, and budgets while simultaneously managing daily media relations activities.
Excellent judgment, decision-making, and follow-through skills essential and the ability to lead and work effectively as a key member of a small team.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field required.
Salary Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403b retirement plan, 22 days vacation plus 13 paid holidays and 12 sick days annually. Staff also receives free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period.
