UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA: SENIOR INTERACTIVE DESIGNER
The University of California, Office of the President, seeks an energetic Senior Interactive Designer to join its newly formed Communications team. The position conceives and designs high-impact, high-visibility web sites by applying experience in Web design and information architecture. The position, alongside the Marketing and Communication creative team, will work to transform the university's primary online presence - www.ucop.edu / www.universityofcalifornia.edu—into a more effective communication vehicle.
The successful candidate will also develop other identified university on-line collateral, mini-sites and on-line marketing communication efforts that may include e-mail marketing, Flash and other multimedia presentations, and more. Position will have a role in establishing university-wide web style guidelines. The Web (interactive) designer will work as a part of a full creative team that includes other designers, a multimedia (video/audio) team and a Web developer and will have close interaction with content creators in the Marketing and Communication team.
Duties:
Conceives and effectively communicates to unit leadership and university ideas for highly creative, clear, purposeful, and user-centered Web design that builds the UC system brand. Designs Web and on-line projects that span the range of visual communications needs and include recurring annual projects as well as entirely new concepts. The designer:
• Creates compelling, user-centered visual design concepts for interactive Web sites and other on-line publications, optimizing the use of screen layout and user interface elements.
• Assesses complex material or messages and devises the best ways to present them visually to enhance clarify and impact
• Spearheads the creation of user experience documentation, site architecture, wireframes and prototypes at different stages of development (paper, wireframe, functional prototypes).
• Works within established deadlines and budget.
• Prepares and partners with developer/programmer in seeing designs and creative concepts through to implementation.
• Works within a larger marketing team, including writers and other design and creative professionals.
• Implements input and feedback from other team members and university clients
• Reviews project goals, messages, audiences, budget, timeline and assists in determining best strategy.
• Participates in the creation of user experience documentation, site architecture, wireframes and prototypes at different stages of development (paper, wireframe, functional prototypes).
• Independently or with the Creative Director makes client presentations.
• Participates in the development of a brand marketing communications and brand strategy for the University of California, specifically focusing on areas in which the strategy can be executed through online communications.
Job Requirements:
• Associate's degree or relevant training in Web and graphic design plus five years experience in graphic design, Web design or new media (multimedia, Flash, etc.); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in using front-end development tools such as Dreamweaver and in designing for cross-platform Web browsers.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash)
• Demonstrated experience of successfully working closely with web developers
• Experience designing for content management systems.
• Familiarity with motion graphics and animation software including Flash, Director, AfterEffects, FinalCutPro or other video-editing systems.
• Basic understanding of web servers, database servers and application server technology.
• Experience working within marketing, design or interactive agency (preferably with Higher Education experience) is preferred.
• Knowledge of or ability to quickly attain knowledge of campus processes, procedures, and applicable rules and regulations for Web communications.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and direct multiple projects to completion in a high-pressure environment; requires impeccable organization skills, as well as skills that demonstrate ability to provide team/project leadership and to collaborate with creative teams.
• Ability to problem-solve, make changes and corrections as they occur.
