Media Relations Officer

The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, known as the Federation, is a membership-based organization that is made up of 69 scholarly associations, 75 universities and colleges and 7 affiliates, comprising more than 50,000 scholars, graduate students and practitioners across Canada - the largest single segment of Canada's research community. It strives to support and advance research, teaching and learning in the humanities and social sciences, fields which are intrinsically important to the development of social, cultural and economic understanding.

The Federation is a non-profit, charitable organization, governed by an Executive Committee and Board of Directors made up of scholars from its member groups, with a permanent secretariat of 17 employees based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is funded through membership fees, events, project funding from government bodies and endowment funds. Apart from its advocacy work with the federal government, the Federation is best known as the organizer of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, which draws over 8,000 researchers, scholars and students to a different university each year. It also administers the Aid to Scholarly Publications Program which subsidizes approximately 180 scholarly books each year and organizes the popular Breakfast on the Hill lecture series for parliamentarians and the Ottawa policy community.

The Federation is currently seeking a seasoned professional for the communications team.

Media Relations Officer

Position Description

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Media Relations Officer is responsible for planning, designing and implementing communications programs to promote social sciences and humanities research and that enhance the Federation’s visibility and public profile. H/she is responsible for maintaining positive relations with journalists and media officiers in stakeholder organizations, and for monitoring and recommending strategies to take advantage of new media opportunities. The Media Relations Officer is also responsible for the development, design, implementation and delivery of a wide range of internal and external communications products and activities, including press releases, media events and kits, publications, promotional materials, and communication action plans. Finally, h/she works closely with the Director of Communications to ensure that all communications messages, activities and deliverables align with the overall strategic goals of the Federation and within planned budgets.


H/she will focus on execution and will be responsible for the implementation of tactical activities, setting priorities and maximizing resources to achieve the desired results. Of critical importance is the Media Relations Officer’s ability to understand the environment within which the Federation operates and the key stakeholders within the community. With this knowledge the Media Relations Officer will develop key messages in all communications initiatives and issues that arise.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop, write, and edit content for a wide range of communications products, from media releases and backgrounders to Web content and various reports
• Develop and implement communication and media plans for specific Federation activities, such as Congress, ASPP, fundraising, and policy issues
• Plan, coordinate and deliver media and promotional events to support the Federation’s overall strategic plan and vision
• Maintain effective relations with the media, developing story angles and ideas aimed at promoting the relevance and importance of social sciences and humanities research to broad audiences
• Conduct regular assessments of the public environment to identify external developments, decisions or processes that may affect the Federation’s reputation and credibility
• monitor the results and effectiveness of various media activities and campaigns
• Provide input on strategic direction for the Communications Team and contribute to the corporate Strategic Plan
• Build and maintain Federation online visibility through social media
• As required, coordinate professionals (both external and internal) to deliver a broad spectrum of communications products and activities, including writing services, graphic design, public relations, media relations, translation, etc.

Qualifications:

• A post-secondary degree or diploma in communication, media relations, journalism or other related discipline
• 5 years of relevant experience in journalism, media relations or communications, including direct experience with the media and some experience in NGO or non-profit organizations
• Must have experience in dealing and building relationships with the media, and communications professionals in other organizations
• Excellent English and French writing and editing skills, as well as experience in journalistic or promotional writing
• Knowledge of new media applications, media relations and social media environment . Experience with publication and design computer software, including layout/design, is a definite asset
• Demonstrated ability to manage and organize multiple tasks and appropriately prioritize overlapping activities and deliverables
• Must be detail oriented, with a strong focus on excellence, organization, planning, and follow up
• Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with internal and external teams
• Demonstrate strong professional standards and work ethic as well as tact, diplomacy and good judgement in dealing with staff, elected or appointed officers of the Federation and members of universities and of governments at all levels
• Expectation of some travel up to two weeks at a time at least once per year and occasional weekend work
