full time Associate Director of Campus Communications

Valparaiso University, one of the nation’s premier master’s level universities, seeks an outstanding Associate Director of Campus Communications who can advance the mission and vision of Valpo by designing and implementing strategies that build institutional pride and awareness of Valpo’s brand among members of the campus community. The associate director must possess effective writing and editing skills, the ability to build positive relationships with members of the campus community and offer creative solutions to an array of marketing communications challenges. As part of the above, the associate director will work closely with other members of Valpo’s Integrated Marketing and Communications (IMC) team to coordinate internal communications with related marketing activities.



Specific Responsibilities/Skills
1. Understands the mission and vision of Valparaiso University and can effectively communicate it to various audiences, with a focus on messages to students, faculty and staff.

2. Strong project manager able to conceive and follow through with ideas to help build pride and affinity among members of the campus community by writing and editing communications for the entire campus audience.

3. Prepares a strong overall internal communications strategy, including themes, messages and tools.

4. Covers internal events as a reporter and ensures photography and video coverage at events as needed.

5. Will coordinate crisis communications for the University and create a plan to build campus awareness of the plan.

6. Assists in writing speeches and other messages for University officials.

7. Must have the ability to work closely with other campus administrators, faculty and deans on internal communications projects.



Qualifications
1. B.A. or higher, in journalism or communications, or a related field.

2. Five years experience in writing and editing for professional publications or work in internal communications. Strong written and verbal skills, with a solid portfolio of work that demonstrates skill in analysis, creativity, writing and editing.

3. Self-starter with excellent project management abilities who is able to shepherd projects from concept to completion, enlisting the support and enthusiasm of others in the process.

4. Can serve as part of a team for special event planning, offering creative ideas, managing details and implementing plans.

5. Demonstrated creative thinker in developing editorial content and solutions to marketing communication challenges.

6. Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well alone, one-on-one, or as part of a larger team.

7. Proven ability to meet deadlines.

8. Familiar with Associated Press Style Guide.

9. Willing and able to support the mission of Valparaiso University.



Reporting Relationship
Reports to the Senior Director of Public Relations as part of a strong IMC team. A three-person public relations unit within the IMC team includes media relations, campus communications and University events.
