full time Web Designer

at Concordia University in Montreal, QC, Canada

Reporting to the Director, Internal and Web Communications, and functionally to the Coordinator, University Web Communications, the incumbent is responsible for the conceptualization and production of web materials; he or she designs, produces, and maintains various university web sites and works on the main university site.

Primary responsibilities

Create design prototypes, including graphic design, site navigation, and layout of content, for the main university web site and for department web sites.
Create visual concepts that match the content and the image wanted by the clients but that fit in Concordia’s global image as well; ensure sites are easy to navigate.
Ensure that the layout of the content is accessible and logical; recommend improvements if necessary.
Build websites using technologies that conform to international standards and ensure that sites are universally accessible.
Perform maintenance and updates to existing web sites when requested by clients.
Provide training on the maintenance and update procedures to clients who choose to take charge of their own websites.
Contribute to the overall development of the Web Communications group and of the university website.
Work on special projects.


Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in communications, graphic design, computer science, engineering, or other discipline related to the primary responsibilities and two to four years of experience in web design.
Advanced knowledge of XHTML, CSS, and digital imaging and illustration with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Knowledge of JavaScript and PHP; experience with Macromedia Flash.
Knowledge of different web browsers, web standards, accessibility issues, and cross-platform design issues.
Knowledge of desktop publishing applications, web hosting issues, and photography skills definite highly desirable.
Knowledge of and experience with MovableType a definite asset.
Very good spoken and written English (level 5) in order to design prototypes and train staff and faculty. Basic knowledge of spoken French (level 3) for routine communication with the university community.
Attention to detail, customer-service orientation, and creativity in problem-solving.
Ability to work in a team and to communicate in a clear way to provide training to staff and faculty.


Salary
$49,584.93 - $59,258.58 (CAD) per annum
