full time DIRECTOR, DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS

Essential Functions:
Provide leadership, strategy development, and supervise creative and programming work for campus wide interactive/digital and new and emerging media on campus. Collaborate with the Director of Marketing in identifying “best use” of interactive and digital technology in university communications. Develop monitoring system for UCR presence in nontraditional media.

Provide leadership in developing and managing the University of California, Riverside Web Space including the gateway home page, other key University-wide sites, and coordinating second-tier pages that provide navigation to the rest of the UCR Web space.

The incumbent will take leadership in implementing the Web Marketing Plan, fostering a collaborative and collegial environment for initiating, planning, setting direction and establishing goals for Web-based projects that advance institutional, school, department or specific unit goals. The incumbent also will assume day-to-day management responsibility for the UCR home site and attendant sites, and help conceive and develop web content for these sites. Critical to the position is the ability to play an advocacy and educational role in promoting an understanding of and exploring the use of emerging Internet-based technologies, conceptualizing and prototyping services based on these technologies, and initiating campus-wide projects that relate to these areas. Also, the incumbent will serve as a principal liaison with UCR Internet and Web-related groups and as an advocate for the Office of Strategic Communications and University wide administration.

Monitor new and emerging technologies and technology applications; provide recommendations to Associate Vice Chancellor for External Relations. Supervise UCR video operations for Web, broadcast, and cable distribution. Supervise creative and technical in-house and contracted talent.

Convene and lead campus-wide group of interactive communicators and participate in “thought leader” professional groups with peers outside UCR.

Work is determined and/or assigned in both broad areas of responsibility or by specific projects, and is reviewed in terms of meeting objectives, quality of work, innovative approaches, ability to provide technical and administrative leadership in the areas of responsibility, and in meeting deadlines. Collegial environment. Work is often not based on established procedures.

Minimum Requirements:
# Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

# Broad experience in information design and management is required as is knowledge of database design, PC applications and telecommunication protocols.

# Skill in supervising and/or working with others, including organizing workflow to accomplish established objectives, training, evaluating effectiveness, leading by example, and handling human relation's issues.

# Skill in prioritizing tasks to complete work in a timely manner when there are: changes in workload, changes in tasks, deadline pressures, competing projects, and heavy workloads.

# Skill in exchanging ideas, information and opinions with individuals and groups, both accurately and tactfully, to formulate projects, processes, policies, and arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions and solutions.

# Demonstrated writing skills to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences using different tools: letters, e-mail, proposals, reports, surveys, and evaluations.

# Skill in making appropriate on-the-job decisions, particularly in establishing policies and procedures.

# Broad understanding of Internet and Web-based technology is required.

# Demonstrated knowledge of and hands-on experience with HTML, CSS, Perl, PHP, MySQL, and web browser technologies, understanding of other aspects of web site creation.

# Knowledge in the use of high-end site design and content management software.

# Ability to analyze information, problems, situations and procedures to: define problem or objective, identify the relevant concerns and/or factors, formulate logical objective conclusions, evaluate effectiveness of project, and/or modify project or conclusions as appropriate.

# Ability to understand technical issues and to communicate them to non-technical staff.

# Ability to explain procedures and reasoning in a concise, logical, thorough and practical manner.

# Ability to work as part of a team and as team leader to motivate others toward a common goal.

# Ability to work independently and complete tasks with minimal supervision.

# Ability to interact with persons from a variety of social, cultural and economic backgrounds to create and increase positive attitudes toward the University.

# Hired applicant must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

Preferred Qualifications:
# Advanced degree and/or training with exposure to advanced Internet technologies and concepts.

# Skill in making oral group presentations to provide information and conduct meetings.

# Skill in maintaining and monitoring budgets.

# Informed knowledge of off-campus resources and vendors.
