full time Web Developer

at Carleton College in Northfield, MN

The Science Education Resource Center (SERC) is accepting applications for a web developer. This position will work closely with the Technical Director to develop and support SERC’s web infrastructure. This infrastructure underpins dozens of cutting edge science education projects that reach millions of visitors each year. The web developer will play a key role in ensuring these projects continue to reach their audiences effectively through exceptional websites.

SERC works to improve education through projects that support educators. Although our work has a particular emphasis on undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education, we work with educators across a broad range of disciplines and at all educational levels. An office of Carleton College, our work is funded primarily through National Science Foundation grants. The office has special expertise in effective pedagogies, geoscience education, community organization, workshop leadership, digital libraries, website development and program and website evaluation.

This is a full-time position that is eligible for the College’s benefit package.


Job Responsibilities

• Develop front and back-end code to enhance SERC’s content management system.
• Work with SERC’s web team, supporting their use of the content management system in running SERC–hosted websites.
• Work with Technical Director to refine, document and support SERC’s technical infrastructure to ensure it operates reliably and efficiently.


Required Qualifications

• Bachelors degree
• Demonstrated ability to design and write well-structured, pragmatically scoped server-side (e.g. PHP) and client side (Javascript) code to power websites that are satisfying and efficient to work with.
• Demonstrated ability to independently complete projects on schedule and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work independently on loosely defined tasks as well as in close cooperation with a tight-knit team.
• Ability to rapidly learn new technical skills and share that expertise with others.
• Excellent communication skills: from creating literate and illuminating comments within written code to clearly communicating complicated technical issues to non-technical co-workers.
• Familiarity with web development in a UNIX/Apache environment.


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with writing HTML and CSS to create web sites that are sensitive to web standards, reflect accessible design and demonstrate excellent usability.
• Familiarity with UNIX system administration concepts and practices
• Familiarity with the use of MySQL in web development
