Media Relations Manager
at Mount Mary College in Milwaukee
Mount Mary College is currently seeking an individual to contribute to the realization of our mission through the role of Media Relations Manager. This is a part-time (20 hours per week), 12-month position working out of an on-campus office. The primary tasks are to develop and maintain relationships with local and regional media outlets; prepare news releases and other announcements about college news and events; and coordinate the distribution of same (both print and electronic distribution) in a timely manner.
Responsibilities:
Monitor campus activities, initiatives, and events; gather facts and conduct interviews as needed to develop press releases and news stories
Prepare news releases, church bulletin notices, and public service announcements for college news and events; coordinate distribution of same
Develop and maintain relationships with representatives from local and regional media outlets (print and electronic)
Distribute college information to journals of higher education and other professional publications
Develop feature story ideas, photo opportunities and “expert sources” tips and pitch to appropriate media
Develop and maintain distribution lists (electronic and print) for news releases and other items
Post college news on appropriate external Web sites
Review editorial calendars of appropriate media outlets to discern future story opportunities
Develop list of media calendars of coming events; submit information on college events to them in timely fashion
Coordinate preparation and distribution of hometown news releases for student achievements and scholarships
Measure the effectiveness of the media relations efforts
Maintain clipping packet of Mount Mary media exposure
Coordinate communications with college neighbors
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in communications, marketing or journalism
Minimum of three years work experience in marketing/public relations or media setting
High level writing skills, including news releases and short feature stories (samples required)
Proven track record of placing stories in various media (samples required)
Good verbal and interpersonal skills (interviewing skills required)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
E-mail and Internet savvy
Ability to multi-task; work quickly and efficiently; meet deadlines; prioritize projects
Cooperative team player with good work habits (reliable, punctual, motivated, productive, accountable)
Self-starter with the ability to work independently
