Web Developer
at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA
Hiring Range: $52,000 - $59,000
Basic Function
Reporting to the Director of Web Communications, this position will be responsible for developing websites and web applications for the University and individual departments. The Web Developer collaborates with other members of the Web Communications team to create and publish web products that meet the University’s marketing and communications goals while serving the needs of students, alumni and employees.
Representative Duties
1. Ensure websites adhere to usability and accessibility standards, conform to brand guidelines, and follow internal web development processes.
2. Develop and publish a variety of websites, including scripting and maintaining homegrown web applications that power those websites.
3. Further development of CLU’s mobile web presence to support a variety of devices and user needs.
4. Remain current on new technologies and emerging industry trends. Bring new ideas, best practices and creative solutions forward in order to improve upon the user experience and overall web presence. Provide technical support to the Web Communications team and to other members of the community as needed.
5. Verify the security of all websites and work with Information Systems and Services to ensure web applications are developed in a secure fashion.
6. Assist in the selection, implementation and customization of a content management system.
Knowledge of
HTML 5, CSS 3, JavaScript/jQuery/AJAX (cross browser development)
Advanced knowledge of PHP and SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
Relational database optimization and best practices
Web Services and associated languages: SOAP, REST, JSON, etc.
Wordpress (single and multi-user installations)
Experience with XML/XSLT a plus
Ability to
Work independently and as part of a team
Manage assigned tasks and adhere to project schedules
Think strategically about user experience and effectiveness of information systems
Multitask and manage responsibilities
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with units across the organization
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum 2 years professional experience developing websites and web applications
Demonstrated commitment to excellence, initiative, and ownership of projects
Exceptional debugging and problem solving skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Physical Abilities:
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard
Seeing to view a computer monitor
Sitting for extended periods of time
