Bastyr University and Bastyr Center for Natural Health are ready to move forward with implementation of the Epic Systems EMR software at our Wallingford clinic. We have defined a new position to serve as “EMR guru” and IT support contact for our users. The incumbent in this position will play a key role in managing the EMR implementation for approximately the first year. Following implementation, which will include thorough training, s/he will also become the primary trainer of new system users and of other trainers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Serve as the Epic Systems electronic medical records (EMR) and practice management (PM) software expert for Bastyr Center for Natural Health (BCNH). Working closely with other members of the EMR/PM implementation and management team, take a key role in system implementation activities, planning, training and user support. Provide direct support to patient care teams in the clinical work setting to facilitate the introduction, acceptance, integration and optimal use of the Epic software. Manage EMR/PM user accounts and privileges. Work with clinic personnel to assess work flow requirements and make recommendations to front-office, clinical, and billing office staff based on potential efficiencies in the EMR/PM software. Monitor all system work queues and resolve issues.

2. In the implementation phase, participate in managing the EMR/PM project. Work with OCHIN (the collaborative organization providing our Epic software and support) and the BCNH implementation team to help plan and carry out the implementation. Participate as a key member of the clinic’s implementation team to understand workflows, configuration/design decisions, and policy considerations. During and following implementation, serve as BCNH’s Epic EMR/PM champion. Collaborate with clinic leadership and users to identify opportunities for efficiencies in clinic operations, clinical practice support, and improved health outcomes. Provide instruction to users that follow BCNH best clinical and administrative practices and promote and champion the use of electronic medical records during all interactions with internal and external stakeholders.

3. Identify staff, faculty and clinician training needs and recommend training plan when applicable. Design and provide training and documentation as needed to supplement materials provided by OCHIN and Epic Systems. Support faculty members who train students as part of clinic entry preparation.

4. Answer trouble calls and provide technical support for computer users at Bastyr Center. Assist users in all aspects of their computer use. This may include hardware and software diagnosis and problem-solving; setting up new network users and performing initial user orientation and training; advising in best use of software; answering software questions, and more. Consult with other IT and clinic staff and with outside software vendors for guidance when necessary.

5. Serve as primary contact between Bastyr Center and OCHIN for the purpose of reporting technical problems and ensuring follow-up. Work with OCHIN and clinic staff, faculty and students to optimize use of the system through implementation of new Epic features and upgrades. Attend appropriate clinic department meetings and Bastyr IT department staff meetings as Epic expert and as OCHIN liaison. Act as BCNH’s Site Specialist (as defined by OCHIN), including participating in OCHIN’s Site Specialist Workgroup and other workgroups as appropriate.

6. Work with IT’s Network Administrator and HelpDesk staff to assist in network and workstation troubleshooting and maintenance. Install new workstation software including working with the Application Team when rolling out large database applications to desktops. Make hardware repairs when indicated; recommend hardware replacements and purchases.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

• One to two years’ experience with practice management systems, and two or more years’ experience providing computer user support, is required.

• Four-year college degree in a computer- or healthcare- related field, or equivalent experience is required.

• Must have knowledge of medical information systems (Practice Management and Electronic Medical Records), preferably Epic Systems.

• Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office, and be a quick and independent learner for other programs. Must have experience troubleshooting wide range of hardware and software problems on the PC and in a networking environment.

• Must be able to accurately diagnose and correct hardware and software problems.

• Must have strong organizational and project management skills.

• Must be able to motivate and encourage others in learning new skills.

• Must be highly skilled in treating end-users with respect, sensitivity, patience and good humor. This is a “customer service” position.

• Must be a good listener and instructor, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Must have the ability to “think globally,” recognizing trends, identifying and preventing potential problems, creating solutions that anticipate the long-term effects, as well as solve the current problem.

• Must be able to lift and move computers, monitors and printers.

PREFERRED:

• Prefer knowledge of medical clinic operations, both front- and back-office.

• Prefer knowledge of HIPAA regulations.

• Prefer experience with EMR and/or Epic Systems.

• Two or more years\' experience supporting computer users in a medical clinic, preferably both front and back office, is preferred.

Full time, 40 hours per week. Salary range is $26.00 - $28.00 per hour + comprehensive benefits package.
