Higher Ed Experts' Advisory Board

Composed of six volunteer members, Higher Ed Experts' Advisory Board was created to help HEE serve the needs of the higher ed professional community.

 

All the members of this Advisory Board are well-known speakers and recognized leaders in the fields of Web, marketing, PR and admissions in higher education. They hold executive positions in universities and colleges and are devoted to the advancement of their professions.

David Bowers, Assistant Dean for External Affairs, California Western School of Law (CA)

David Bowers

David Bowers is assistant dean for external affairs at California Western School of Law in San Diego. He oversees the development, alumni relations, marketing, and communications functions at the law school.
Bowers has nearly 17 years of development experience, including capital campaigns in religious, hospital-based and educational institutions. Prior to coming to California Western, Bowers was senior campaign director at Jerold Panas, Linzy and Partners, a development-consulting firm. 
David received his M.Div. from Nashotah House, and B.A. from the University of the South.  He holds a Certificate in Planned Giving from the College of William & Mary, Virgina.
David designed his first web site for a national non-profit in 1996 and began speaking on the subject of the Internet and Not-for-Profits in 1998. In 2006 and 2007 he presented seminars on Web 2.0, digital convergence and possible implications for Higher Ed’s relationship building efforts, at CASE international conferences.

Andrew Careaga, Director of Communications, Missouri University of Science and Technology (MO)

Andrew Careaga

Andrew Careaga is a blogger, PR guy and occasional freelance writer with more than 17 years' experience in higher education PR and marketing. He's currently director of communications at Missouri University of Science and Technology, one of the few public universities in the nation with a tight technological focus. A member of the Missouri S&T staff since 1991, he previously served as manager of public relations, news and features editor for the university's alumni magazine, and the university's first webmaster. A veteran blogger, he contributes to Missouri S&T's research blog, Visions (visions.mst.edu), and manages the Name Change Communications blog (namechange.mst.edu), which the university established to encourage communication with alumni, students and other constituents during its recent name change. (Missouri S&T was formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla.) Careaga also blogs frequently on his Higher Ed Marketing weblog (highered.prblogs.org). A member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, Careaga's involvement with CASE includes a two-year term as chair of CASE District VI (1998-2000) and a three-year term on the CASE Communications and Marketing Commission (2002-2005). He also served on the CASE Commission on Opportunity and Equity from 1994-1996.

Joe Hice, Associate Vice President, Marketing & Public Relations, University of Florida (FL)

Joe Hice

Joe Hice, APR, is associate vice president of marketing & public relations for The University of Florida. He is responsible for marketing, advertising, public relations and employee communications activities at the University.  He also directs the University’s news bureau.

Hice joined the University after a long career with some of the nation’s most respected and well-known recreational product brands including Harley-Davidson, Segway, Sea-Doo Watercraft, and others.  He also has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Journalism & Communications from The University of Florida, and an MBA from The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Hice was Chief Marketing Officer of Segway Inc. in Bedford, NH.  He also served as Director of Corporate Communications for Harley-Davidson Motor Company in Milwaukee, WI, and as Director of Marketing Communications for Bombardier Inc.’s Marine Products Division.  At Harley, Hice was responsible for all corporate communications activities, media relations and employee communications.

Prior to entering the corporate world, Hice was co-owner of his own public relations and marketing firm in Tampa. FL. He was also business editor of the Tampa Times Newspaper and a staff writer with Florida Trend Magazine and Tampa Bay Business Journal.  He is accredited in Public Relations by the Public Relations Society of America.

David Jarmul, Associate Vice President of News and Communications, Duke University (NC)

David Jarmul

David Jarmul is associate vice president of news and communications for Duke University in North Carolina. He directs the news service, oversees the top-level web pages and helps coordinate communications activities on issues affecting the university. He has helped launch a number of web initiatives at Duke, including the online “Duke Today,” RSS feeds on diverse news topics, video projects and audio stories, and has worked internally to strengthen ties across Duke’s communications and web communities. An honors graduate of Brown University, David came to Duke in 2001 from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland, where he was actively involved in both printed and web communications, including the development of online projects involving science and science education. Previously, he was speechwriter for the president, director of an op-ed service and deputy director of the news office of the National Academy of Sciences. He also has served as editor for a magazine on "appropriate technology" for developing countries and freelanced for numerous publications. He is a former president of the D.C. Science Writers Association and served with the Peace Corps in Nepal.

Charlie Melichar, Vice President, PR & Communications, Colgate University (NY)

Charlie Melichar

Charlie Melichar is vice president for public relations and communications at Colgate University, where he previously served as director of media relations. His office is responsible for institutional positioning via publications, media relations, and web communications serving all of Colgate’s constituents with focus on prospective students and university alumni. Prior to his move to Colgate, Charlie held positions at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), PR Newswire, and ProfNet. A native of Long Island, NY, Charlie earned his B.A. in communications from Marist College.

Andrew Shaindlin, Executive Director, Caltech Alumni Association (CA)

Andrew Shaindlin

An alumni relations professional since 1989, Andrew Shaindlin has worked at Brown University (his alma mater) and the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). Since 1999 he has been the Executive Director of the Caltech Alumni Association at the California Institute of Technology.

 

Professionally Andrew contributes regularly to CASE Currents, has written chapters for two CASE books, and for an independently published book about online business networking. Involved with CASE since 1990, he served as vice chair of the Commission on Alumni Relations, and as chair of the EDUCAUSE Task Force on Identity Management in higher education.

 

Over the years he has presented at numerous conferences, including CASE's Summit for Advancement Leaders, the CASE Technology Forum (co-chair), District conferences, Summer Institutes, the Minary Conference on Alumni Education (chair), the Educational Travel Conference, the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education, and the Council of Alumni Association Executives. In September 2007 he will present to the European Association for International Education.

 

Andrew participates in the Association of Private College and University Alumni Directors (PCUAD). He writes the blog for alumni professionals, Alumni Futures.

 

He is also pursuing a Master's degree in education part-time at Claremont Graduate University. He lives in Pasadena, California with his wife, daughter and their two dogs.
